1. First, stay calm.
Do not panic — act calmly and carefully.
⸻
• Quietly leave the area.
In most cases, if the bear notices you first, it will run away on its own.
• If the bear doesn’t seem to notice you, gently wave your hand or speak softly to let it know you are human.
⸻
• Never run away.
Running may trigger the bear’s instinct to chase.
• Do not scream or throw objects.
The bear might feel threatened and attack in defense.
• Instead, slowly back away while facing the bear.
• Playing dead does not work.
• Climbing a tree is not effective.
Asiatic black bears are excellent climbers.
⸻
• When a bear stands on its hind legs:
It doesn’t always mean it will attack — it’s often just trying to check what’s going on.
Even bears are scared and want to escape if possible.
Slowly back away without making sudden movements.
(At this distance, bear spray can be effective.)
• If the bear actually attacks:
Some people have successfully driven off a bear using tools like sticks or machetes.
If that’s not possible, protect your vital areas — your face, neck, head, and stomach.
Lie flat on the ground and use your hands to guard the back of your neck.
